Oh my gosh, a new section of the wiki? What's this all about?!!
My name is Floof, and for the last few months I've been toiling away in the wiki backrooms with the help of some of my loret peers to create this new section of the wiki: Blogs!
Why? Well, all of the HDG moderation team (that is to say, the clerks and the lorets) know that keeping our community behind a discord gate has some...problems. We don't have an HDG forum (yet), so in the meantime this is going to be our way of sharing important community info with the wider internet. (Don't take that joke about the HDG forums too seriously, btw, we don't have any plans to add that at this time). So, on these blogs we'll address community moderation issues, any guidance we want to give the setting, but also more lighthearted stuff like a writer's corner where we can spotlight new work!
We're also hoping to tell some of the meta history of HDG as a setting, which we feel is important for folks to understand. We've grown tremendously in the last two years (seriously, it's scary), and we feel like this is another good step forward in making sure things are communicated clearly! Also, as discord conitnues to enshittificate itself, we want to have a backup source to distribute information. You know, just in case.
We also did an overhaul on the glossary as it was slowly falling more and more behind. It now has a list of very commonly used and seen phrases that exist within HDG stories that may not be immediately obvious. It should be easily available for everyone to now view!
Credit for this goes to Stimulacrum and Darkfalli, both of whom are fantastic authors whose work you should check out if you haven't already! All of the clerks and lorets have been HARD at work behind the scenes to make these two new changes. Extra shoutouts to teaganthedoll, problems, and of course the one and only GlitchyRobo for all their work. And a thank you to all the rest of my clerk peers too for keeping the discord server running every day.
I'm so glad you asked! You may have noticed that some of our pages now have a spiffy green banner that will fly in to remind you that our wiki is still under construction. It's true! We're working on a lot of things behind the scenes, inlcuding lots of big changes. They aren't going to happen soon, but they are going to happen. As much as possible, we're going to try to be transparent about these changes, which is why we have this new blog system!
I had a lot of fun learning javascript, css and html for this project ("fun" being relative when you're dealing with those three) and I may make a seperate post detailing all the neat things I've learned. It's been silly! I have to thank problems and darkfalli again here for bearing with me as I go from the absolute basics to being able to reliably type <a href="humandomestication.guide/silly-fun-times> woah link here </a>! I only mess it up some of the time, now! Yay!
I also want to thank madodig on github for the clever javascript overrides that allows the default wikiJS info cards to be hidden on the blog pages. There's actually a lot more neat stuff that code can do, and maybe I'll make use of it some day!
This all being said, if you notice any glaring issues (especially with regards to accessibility!) please let me know by joining our discord to give feedback. (I know, I know, it's ironic that I just said we're doing this to not be reliant on discord, but this is what we have for right now.)
